North Lincolnshire Council has introduced a number of pioneering mini recycling centres for residents living in high-rise flats in and around Scunthorpe.
Residents living in Market Hill and Trent View flats in Scunthorpe can now, for the first time, take part in kerbside recycling by using node 360®. This is a new recycling system not used before in North Lincolnshire.
In 2006 the council, rolled out its kerbside recycling scheme to the majority of residents. This meant they could recycle glass, cans, aluminium foil, paper and organic waste. But that particular scheme wasn’t suitable for everyone. So the council promised to look into a separate scheme for those living in high-rise flats. And now residents living in two high-rise flats in the town can now participate in recycling their waste thanks to the council purchasing the special modular node® units.
The nodes, have been supplied by Taylor®, a leading provider of waste and recycling containment solutions that offers an adaptable and aesthetic solution in town centres and urban regeneration areas.
A spokeswoman for North Lincolnshire Council said:“The recycling node® is an innovative way of helping residents living in high-rise flats to participate in recycling their waste. It enables these residents to recycle their cans, plastic bottles, glass and paper without having to walk to their nearest household recycling facility. The council is committed to driving up recycling levels in North Lincolnshire and the node® ensures all of our residents now have the opportunity to recycle their waste.”
Dr David Gillett, Director of Taylor Intelligence, part of Taylor® who supplied the node®, units said: “This reflects the determination of the council to increase recycling participation among residents and shoppers. It doesn’t have to be difficult – we are offering a recycling solution that will fit easily into the community environment, look appealing and help meet the challenge faced by councils up and down the country to meet landfill diversion targets.”
The development comes at a time when sustainable waste management is central to the Government’s environmental vision, and local councils are facing the challenge to reduce waste going to landfill and increase recycling rates in order to meet the 2010 landfill diversion target of 75% of 1995 levels.
node®’s modular, wheeled design enables it to be used in multiples from one to four, allowing it to fit into confined corners, against walls or as a central feature in a public area. nodeº has been purposely created to accommodate a wide variety of waste streams and the unit can be fitted with a stylish canopy, lighting or signage. For increased security, node®’s galvanised steel body offers protection from fire and vandalism and a security post fixed to a concrete base prevents any unauthorised movement.
The Environment Department introduced a nodeº recycling facility at Loch Promenade, Douglas, to encourage the public to separate recyclables such as newspapers, glass and cans from rubbish that would normally be sent to landfill. As well as being easy to use and practical for collectors, the nodeº has also been designed to complement surroundings such as public parks, high streets or residential areas.
Joanne Hetherington, the Isle of Man Government’s Recycling Officer, comments: “Loch Promenade gardens are beautifully maintained and the whole area is very popular with local people and visitors. The new recycling station will make it more convenient for everyone to recycle, especially after their lunchtime breaks and family picnics. This is key to maintain our high environmental and street-scene standards ”
The nodeº was designed and supplied by Taylor, the UK’s leaders in waste and recycling solutions, and is one element of the Isle of Man Government’s Environmental Programme. Commenting on the importance of encouraging recycling, Dr David Gillett, Business Development Director of Taylor’s, said: “Recycling is a key priority and as part of the public sector’s commitment to boosting participation, it is essential that more facilities are available in open areas so that we can extend the positive culture of recycling away from the home and office. The nodeº has a proven track record for achieving this and is also cost effective for collectors – helping the bottom line.”
